When you need more than a freelancer, but less than an agency

There's a sweet spot between hiring a freelancer and hiring a big creative agency. I know because I've worked on both sides of it for more than fourteen years. Sometimes you need a specialist to come in, do the thing and get out. Sometimes you need a big multidisciplinary team. But what happens when the problem is bigger than a single creative, but doesn't warrant the layers, overheads and scale of a traditional agency? That's where Studio Dawn sits.

The simplest way I think about it is: a freelancer brings specialist execution. An agency brings scale and multidisciplinary production. Studio Dawn brings senior creative leadership, strategy and execution — without the agency overhead. And a Fractional Creative Director brings that senior creative leadership into your business on an ongoing, part-time basis.

A freelancer can be exactly what you need when you know what you need: a copywriter to write the words, a designer to make the identity, a developer to build the website. But when the brief is still forming, someone needs to connect the dots, or you need senior creative thinking as well as making, you can quickly end up carrying the strategy and project management yourself. Studio Dawn can lead the whole project, staying close to the thinking and the making, while bringing in trusted specialists when the work needs them. One senior creative accountable for the whole thing, with a great team around us when required.

That's the kind of work I've always gravitated towards. Stretchy Social Yoga Club started with spotting a gap for something more social and community-led in yoga, then building the brand, experience and community around it. Picky Images came from a need for more authentic New Zealand imagery, turning that opportunity into a brand, platform and photographer community. Caike Club is another example — creating an IRL AI learning community because I couldn't find the thing I wanted to exist. These are the ambiguous, early-stage projects where the brief often starts with "I think there's something here…" rather than a neat list of deliverables. See the Studio Dawn case studies.

But I'm not only interested in small or new ventures. My previous advertising and brand work includes Whittaker's and Fire and Emergency New Zealand, alongside years of crafted brand, campaign and design work. Those projects taught me how to find the idea, build the strategy around it and make something people actually notice — often within much bigger teams and production environments. That range is important to Studio Dawn. I can bring the strategic and creative thinking of a senior agency creative, without automatically bringing the agency machine. See more of my previous work.

Then there's the Fractional Creative Director model. This is less about one big project and more about having the right creative brain in the room every week. If your business is making constant brand, marketing and creative decisions but you're not ready to hire a full-time Creative Director, I can work alongside your team one or two days a week — setting creative direction, shaping briefs, challenging thinking, mentoring creatives, connecting brand and business goals, and helping everyone make better decisions. You get senior creative leadership without adding a full-time salary or agency retainer.

So, which one do you need?

The work we love

The work I love most sits in that messy, exciting middle: ambitious founders, growing businesses, new ventures, brands ready for a next chapter, and creative teams who know there's more potential there but need someone to help unlock it. I'm especially drawn to:

More than anything, we're looking for people building something with potential. Something useful, interesting, ambitious, joyful, different or just desperately needed. You might already know exactly what you need, or you might simply know that something needs to change. Either is a good place to start.

If you're building something with potential — or know someone who is — I'd love to hear from you.

Start with Project Discovery.

That's the Studio Dawn sweet spot: enough care, enough idea, enough senior thinking — and enough flexibility to bring the right people in when we need them. No unnecessary layers. No enormous agency overheads. Just good creative thinking, led properly, and made real.
